TMJ is actually an abbreviation for Temporomandibular Joint, or the jaw joint. These joints move each time we chew, talk or even swallow. The TMJ is a sliding joint and not a ball-and-socket like the shoulder. This sliding allows for pressures placed on the joint to be distributed throughout the joint and not just in one area.

Often, pain will be felt in the shoulders and back due to muscle contraction, a condition called myo-fascial pain dysfunction syndrome. Dizziness, disorientation and even confusion are also seen in some people who suffer with TMJ. (Myo-Fascial Pain = Pain of the Muscle Fibers)

A TMJ Massage is one that is applied in a circular motion and uses moderate to deep pressure, depending on the severity of the case. The massage is given directly to the joint and surrounding areas. Along with massage, stretching is also helpful in the relaxation process. Other treatments, which have proven helpful, include:

Effleurage: Gliding strokes with the thumbs and fingertips
Acupressure: Trigger point work and steady pressure to the TMJ and other pressure points in the face and jaw
Heat - Properly placed heat packs can reduce muscle spasms and increase circulation

  Relieves pressure off the TMJ
  Increases range of motion
  Decrease jaw pain
Helps to relax the whole body so you are not as tense
Loosens the superficial muscles of the face along with the deeper lying muscle
